The first period of the The Early Jurassic is the Aalenian. The Megalosaurus is not well know but is important as one of the first dinosaurs to be described. It is ironic only one other dinosaur fossil is known from this period.

Callovosaurus from Thunder Beasts series

Originally seen as a precursor of Allosaurus from North america. now it is thought that the spinosaurids of the Late Cretaceous are descended from animals related to Megalosaurus and Eustreptospondylus.

The following Bajocian and Bathonian periods are only slightly better known. Cetiosaurus the 50 foot Whale Lizard is one the oldest sauropods known. Cetiosaurus was an early sauropod that was primitive in some respects such as having a
solid backbone instead of the more usual hollow bones. It was the first sauropod genus named.

Eustreptospondylus
The theropod Eustreptospondylus is known from a skeleton found in a maritime matrix in England.  It was about 13 feet long.

The Dinosaur Collector presents Middle Jurassic Europe
updated 7/6/06
The Middle Jurassic Era is not well documented the prosauropods seem to have been replaced by sauropods and the early forms of many dinosaurs develop.  While the best finds come from China and more recently South America. Bathonian England had the theropod Megalosaurus and sauropod  Cetiosaurus.  Later in the Callovian the finds include the theropod Eustreptospondylus, sauropods (Cetiosauriscus and Ornithopsis), stegosaur Lexovisaurus, ankylosaur Sarcolestes and the ornithopod Callovosaurus
