LATE
CRETACEOUS
HELL CREEK FORMATION
Edmontosaurus
Edmontosaurus included some of the largest hadrosaurid species, measuring up to 39 ft long and weighing around 4 tons. Several well-preserved specimens are known that include not only bones, but in some cases extensive skin impressions and possible gut contents. We know edmontosaurs had fleshy combs on the head, frills along the spine and verticle stripes to the torso.

There are two known species: Edmontosaurus regalis and Edmontosaurus annectens.

The back of the mouth contained thousands of teeth suitable for grinding food before it was swallowed. This has been hypothesized to have been a crucial factor in the success of this group. This differed from the sauropods that used gastrolithes.
The Hell Creek Formation has the most complete fossil specimen, found in 1999 and nicknamed "Dakota". Calculations of its muscle mass and produced estimates that gave it the ability to outrun Tyrannosaurus.

Hadrosaurines were a sub-family of hadrosaurs distinguished by having solid bumps on their heads, longer, narrower jaws than lambeosaurines, and relatively long, slim limbs.
Previous hadrosaurs next lambeosaurs and small ornithopods.
