UKRD Rubber Dinosaurs  update 021307

from the Dinosaur Collector

The UKRD company provides a range of solid rubbery dinosaur figures ranging from gumball figures to 8 inch Museum style figures.  The figures are marketed in a variety of play sets by several companies and in many colors.   The figures are made in China for a variety of distributors and often packaged with figures like Jasman or PlayVision.  The figures are identifiable by the Stamp U.K.R.D. (this seems to have been discontinued after 1992), the date, made in China, dinosaur name, Alpha character and a production serial number. One possible reason for the lack of information about the UKRD makers, is the company name most likely was changed or the molds changed hands sometime after 1992. The company may have only been producing UKRD dinosaurs for three years.   They are copied as knockoffs in vinyl and rubber and by metal figure makers.  UKRD figures have some consistent characteristics the Brachiosaurus has a crest on the skull without nostrils and a common skin style of deep lines on the back and sides to represent skin folds as seen in modern elephants and rhinos.  Generally they are a little on the chubby side like early Bullyland figures.  Some of the smaller series lack stamps except the made in China.  This could be a sign the molds have passed to other manufacturers.   The figures themselves are based on older reconstructions and the scale is not consistent in each set.  They are often sold in play set combinations that give a good size range of animals with the same look and feel.  Many of the figures mix nicely in Dioramas with pieces from Schleich, Bullyland and Safari.  Currently Toysmith is marketing the UKRD figures with brand new paint jobs.  AAA produces a similar set of figures along with several no name sets out of China. Also see Jasman, Hing Fat and Funrise for other sub museum sets.

Dinosaurs UKRD 91

The 1991 "Museum Line"  12 figures (the Pteranodon are Invicta) there is a degree of color variation seen in these figures but the pattern are consistent.  Vinyl knock offs are being sold.  These figures were often marketed in play sets mixed with the 1993 series.  These are the most modern looking of the URKD line.  The Apatosaurus has a triangular shaped head like Diplodocus rather than the Brontosaurus/Camasaurus style head seen in the smaller series.  Edmontosaurus, Allosaurus and Ankylosaurus are well done.  The  Ankylosaurus uses the traditional reconstruction like the Marx figures.  This is the only UKRD group to have a Protoceratops.

Dinosaur UKRD 92

The 1992 Boely 4 inch line first marketed exclusively by the Boley Company.   Unlike the other UKRD series there is little color variation.  The exception being raptor which was sold in brown and green. These are being sold by Toysmith now with new paint.

The 1992 figures are being marketed again in a boxed play set called Dinosaur Habitat with play mat, plants and rocks.  The Apatosaurus is based on some old Brontosaurus reconstruction with a Camarasaurus head unlike the 91 set.  This reconstruction is used by all the smaller sets.  It was the best Camarasasurus sold for several years.  The Allosaurus is particularly well done.   The Raptors show up in this set and it seems like they made an effort to actually look like real Velocirators rather the the JP characters.

The 1993 paint your own Dinosaurs. These were marketed with the Brachiosaurus, Tyrannosaurus and Dimetrodon from the 1991 set and 3 new dinosaurs. The alpha characters are B,E,F are on the 3 new figures. Given that in all the other series the alpha characters are always sequential there could be at least 3 additional figures. These figures are intermediate in size between 91 and 92 set. The figures are different from the other sets. The Stegosaurus only has 1/2 the plates and spikes of the other series. The raptor has a different style head from the 92 and 93 series raptors.

The 1993 3 inch Play set  of 12 figures. The UKRD stamp is not being used at this point.  Colors can vary.  The Ankylosaurus looks like it is based on the Burien reconstruction of Scolosaurus.  Scolosaurus is now consider to be a junior synonym for Euplocephalus but it may alternately be DyoplosaurusAllosaurus is dropped from the line but Edmontosaurus is added along with Styracosaurus.  I use the the smaller Edmontosaurus for any of the small fabrosaurs or hypsilophidonts that populate the Mesozoic from the Triassic to the Cretaceous.

The 1993 2 inch Play set of 12 figures. The UKRD stamp is not being used at this point. There are at least 3 different paint schemas. The design of the Styracosaurus  has changed from the 3 inch line.  It looks like it could be any of a range of centrosaurines.

The Gumball Machine figures are sold for 2 quarters.  No date stamp or name on figures.

UKRD Bendable Dinosaur: These figures came out in boxed play sets about the time of the first Jurassic Park.  I didn't get them as I wasn't real impressed.  The idea of dinosaurs you can bend into different posed sounds great but the UKRD figures mostly bend in ways that do not mimic life.  The legs bend sideways instead of in and out.  The Safari Tanystropheous or Wild Safari Pteranodon are much more realistic.  I prefer the Disney dinosaur bendable figures.  This is not the full list of figures but just the ones I have picked up or seen pictures of.  These figures are really not suitable for stop action sequences.
